The Bullrush Curtain
The western part of Prince Edward Island, or "up West" as we say, is an exotic and wondrous land. It's like a foreign country to the rest of the province, especially to sophisticated Charlottetown. My wife's brother Peter Handrahan, himself a 'western bear', claims that a border exists at Portage which separates West Prince from the rest of the Island. He calls it the Bullrush Curtain.

Lyrics
I ran into a western bear
With peosh tux and bushy hair
I talked to him as he waited for
His order of peas and gravy

He said I'm second man on the Donna Marie
And a fishing life is good enough for me
I've got big stamps and a four wheel drive
With chrome going every which way

And when the wintertime comes
And it's too cold to fish
I pick up the world on my satelite dish
And never think twice about what I miss
In the land of the Bullrush Curtain

Chorus:

God bless the people up west
How in the world do they stand the test
Where you work if you can and hope for the best
In the land of the Bullrush Curtain

It's Saturday night in the Co-Op square
The Bags and the Cats and the Dicks are there
Making donuts and drinking beer
Putting on a late night show

But when the sun comes up on the Tignish shore
And the priest is ready for his Sunday chores
They'll all be standing at the church door
In the sobre light of morning

Repeat Chorus

I said goodbye to that western bear
With the peosh tux and bushy hair
He got into his truck, put his arm out the window
And I watched the gravel fly

If you ever find the courage to go
Take a Sunday drive up the western road
But Judy's Take Out is a long long way
From the sidewalks of Brighton

Repeat Chorus
End
