The Ballad of Jack Diamond
When I was a kid growing up near Summerside, the annual Lobster Carnival with its Bill Lynch midway was a source of great mystery and excitement. Even at todays Carnival, above the din of high-tech rides and electronic games, you can still hear the "chatter" of the old crown and anchor wheel. Former Island MP George Proud insists this songs is about him!

(You'll need an MP3 player to listen.)

Lyrics
He ran the crown and anchor game
For the local Bill Lynch show
To the teenage girls of Summerside
He was a Romeo
With tangled hair and a purple heart
Tattooed on his right arm
He had a kind of rough and ready charm

Chorus:

Playing cards with Jack Diamond
On a rainy afternoon
When the carnival was closed down
And we were out of school
Playing cards with Jack Diamond
Nobody was to blame
And life was just a crown and anchor game

Nobody knew where he came from
He was a mystery
The sign that hung on the trailer door
Said 'take a chance on me'
He chained smoked and told dirty jokes
He taught us a trick or two
But most of all he taught us how to lose

Repeat Chorus

Now I never win at Bingo
And at times my luck is poor
The horse has usually left the barn
By the time I close the door
But every time I place a bet
I hear the chatter of the wheel
And the luck of young Jack Diamond follows me

Repeat Chorus
End
